2025 Annual Load Crew Competition: Tiger and Reaper AMU go Head-to-Head

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, NV – The smell of jet fuel and the sound of pneumatic tools filled the hangar this week as the Tiger and Reaper Aircraft Maintenance Units (AMU) faced off in the 2025 Annual Load Crew Competition. This year-end showdown determines which crew possesses the ultimate combination of speed, safety, and technical precision.

The Stakes of the Circle

While daily maintenance is about endurance, the Annual Load Crew Competition is a sprint. The event tests the ability of a three-person team to load various munitions—ranging from AIM-120 AMRAAMs to GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munitions—onto their respective aircraft under the pressure of a ticking clock and the watchful eyes of evaluators.

Tiger vs. Reaper: A Storied Rivalry

The atmosphere was electric as the two units took their positions.

  • Tiger AMU: Known for their aggressive pace and "First In, Last Out" mentality, the Tigers entered the competition as the defending champions of the third-quarter trials.

  • Reaper AMU: Carrying a reputation for "silent lethality," the Reapers focused on surgical precision, betting that a zero-discrepancy score would beat the Tigers' raw speed.

"In the heat of battle, a second of hesitation can mean the difference between mission success and failure," said Chief Master Sergeant Marcus Thorne. "These crews aren't just competing for a trophy; they are proving they can deliver under the highest stress imaginable."

The Scorecard

The competition is graded on three primary pillars:

  1. Safety: Any violation of safety protocol results in an immediate point deduction or disqualification.

  2. Reliability: The munitions must be "locked and loaded" exactly according to technical orders.

  3. Time: Every second counts, but speed is worthless if the weapon isn't functional.

The Turning Point

The climax of the event occurred during the loading of the final GBU-12 laser-guided bomb. The Tiger AMU finished their physical load three minutes ahead of the Reapers, sending a roar through their section of the bleachers. However, the Reaper AMU maintained a flawless tool-kit inspection, a critical component that often decides the winner when time scores are close.

The final results remain "under seal" until the annual awards banquet held at the end of the month, but the mutual respect between the crews was evident as they shook hands on the flight line.
